The Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) Phase-2 at Powai’s ADS Marg does not seem to seem be rid of hiccups, even in the last leg of its completion.Explains Hari Ramesh, chief of Consultancy Engineering Services contracted for the JVLR work at the site office, “We have managed to expand the road size to multiple lanes but have to contend with huge lengths of cable and telephone lines while excavating. MTNL workers were to restore the underlying lines simultaneously after we expanded the roads. But we find that the cables are lying open and unattended, leaving work incomplete.”

Mumbai Efforts on to ensure survival of 300 transplanted trees along Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road
In an attempt to give a fresh lease of life to the dying green cover in the area, the residents dwelling close to the Indian Institute of Technology at Powai have joined hands with the MMRDA (Maharashtra Metropolitan Development Authority) officials to ensure that around 300 transplanted trees survive despite the ongoing road-widening and improvement work on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR)

There used to be East Indian villages around Powai Lake many a year ago. However little trace of any of these villages can be found today. However very few of the old timers will forget the "Trindat cha san" (the Feast of Holy Trinity). This is one of the few places where East Indians used to pack their bullock carts and go along with their entire family.
In the old day the view must have been spectacular as this church is located on a hill. Even today whilst driving one can may out the slope both before and after the Holy trinity church.

The renowned site where Powai Lake stands known as Framaji Kavasji was Powai Estate. It was in 1890 that the Britishers dug out the lake at a cost of Rs 6.5 lacs which was given to one Dr Scott in 1799 on payment of yearly rent of Rs 3,200. After Dr Scott’s death in 1816, Powai was taken back by the government in 1826 and leased once again to Framaji Kavasji, a Parsi merchant.
At the time, Powai lake supplied two million gallons of water to Bombay. Today, on the ADS Marg near the Powai Police stn on the lake side remains a dilapidated cottage whose wooden pillars jut on the pavement on the widened JVLR section II. This is the sole remnant of the Framji Kavasji’s presence on the landscape of Powai which may soon whither in the sands of time after 270 years.
Towards the Parksite Vikhroli are the remnants of hillocks called ‘Godrej Hills’ now leased out for quarraying. It is part of the biggest land tracts running along the Eastern express by any private trust is the Godrej factory and offices. Again a leading Parsi business house.

JANUARY 31, 2009 |15:07 | OTHERS BY : TEAM XMajority of residents lament that Powai has lost its greenery in course of last three decades of urbanization. In contrast, the Builders claim that, road side plantations, creation of a Forest Park, development of parks amidst building complexes and manicured gardens.
Like the Nirvana Garden, the Heritage Garden and the Lake-side Garden, have considerable increased the beauty and greenery of Powai.
No doubt, a number of old mango trees along roads and scattered within many of the building complexes stand witness for the "tree-friendliness" of the Builder, and one such tree still stands.

Circa 1988. Powai, a small green dot in the Bhandup suburb of Mumbai, was known for just a couple of things: the prestigious IIT campus and the tranquil Powai lake! And add a dash of hills, dense bushes and pasture land, and lo! That was a jungle called `Powai’!
If someone chanced to live there, he would get scoffed at. For he would probably be one rare specimen who had to settle for a run-down shack, in a prefer-to-forget corner of a much-crowded city!
Its 20 years since. The age-old characteristics are still there_ the sprawling IIT campus but the not-so tranquil Powai lake now. And what I see near these must be seen to be believed. Gone are the dense jungles and the hillocks!
Welcome to Hiranandani Gardens, Powai!
Sky-high buildings competing with each other to touch space, well-manicured gardens, restaurants, hospitals, swanky cars, well-planned roads, and what have you! And what really catches my eye is the kind of crowd that this place now boasts of! The most fashionable crowd is seen here. Even a toddler wears clothes
that make a statement! Well, well, isn’t it a pleasure to not look too far for some real eye-candy!
